High-traffic athletic fields take a serious beating throughout the season. Constant foot traffic, heavy cleats, and varying weather conditions quickly pack down the soil, leaving dry patches, thin turf, and hard ground.
Last month, the team at Innovative Lawn & Landscape was proud to partner with the Terryville Youth Soccer League in Terryville, CT, to complete a comprehensive soccer field turf restoration across their worn playing surfaces.
Here is an inside look at our specialized turf renovation process, from deep vibratory aeration to advanced biotic hydroseeding.
Step 1: Breaking Up Compacted Soil with Vibratory Aeration
Before laying down new seed, establishing the right soil foundation is critical. Turf cannot thrive when soil is heavily compacted; roots struggle to expand, and water simply runs off the surface.
To solve this, we deployed our Ventrac tractor equipped with a heavy-duty vibratory aerator.
Unlike standard core aerators, vibratory aeration fractures hardpack soil deep below the surface:
- Loosens deep soil layers without tearing up existing turf.
- Creates thousands of micro-fractures and channels for maximum oxygen, moisture, and nutrient penetration.
- Opens the root zone, giving newly introduced grass seed optimal root-to-soil contact for rapid establishment.
Step 2: Advanced Hydroseeding with Profile Products’ ProGanics® DUAL System
Once the soil bed was properly prepared, we applied a specialized hydroseeding application using Profile Products’ ProGanics® DUAL Biotic Soil Media & Erosion Control.
Athletic field restoration requires more than standard hydroseed mulch. ProGanics® DUAL performs two critical jobs simultaneously:
- Erosion Control Blanket: It locks down a protective, bonded fiber matrix that holds grass seed firmly in place, preventing seed displacement even during severe rainstorms.
- Biotic Soil Amendment: It infuses depleted soil with rich organic matter and active biological components, kickstarting microbial activity and accelerating root mass growth.
Instead of merely scattering seed and hoping for the best, this two-in-one system provides an optimal microenvironment for fast germination, strong root anchoring, and drought resilience.
